Genuine Victorian British cavalry sword ?c1880
We've been told this is a ceremonial sword, British made, circa 1880, probably used by a cavalryman in an Otago regiment... looks to be in good condition, has not been cleaned or polished by us so has an appropriate aged patina. handle is covered with sharkskin which is intact, has what we believe to be a British proof mark, meaning it has been tested in the Wilkinson Sword factory in England and passed various stress and quality tests. the guard is decorative with a crown and what looks like a hunting horn. the blade is not wickedly sharp which is why i think it may be ceremonial; no bites or chips and is patterned over most of its length on both sides. hard to get clear photos. scabbard in good condition, has what i would call a drag plate on the tip which has a few nibbles. two rings for attaching to your regimental belt. genuine antique, definitely not a replica...
i don't know much about swords and you are welcome to email and ask any questions, if you know more about it than i do (which wouldn't be hard) i'd welcome your comments. if you're outside the Dunedin area i'm happy to ship at buyers expense and risk...
